Spring has Sprung!

A few years ago we planted a small dogwood tree in our front yard. The first year it bloomed, there were only 3 flowers on it. Now, it is a gorgeous tree with such beautiful flowers. I always anticipate spring time for when the dogwoods bloom!

Growing up in Idaho, I don’t think I had ever seen a dogwood. I may never have noticed them, or they just don’t have them out west? I don’t know. Apparently, they are the state tree of Virginia. {a random tid bit that you may not have known."} Also, Ben told me about the legend of the dogwood, and I have been intrigued ever since!

The Legend of the Dogwood

In Jesus' time, the dogwood grew
To a stately size and a lovely hue.
'Twas strong and firm it's branches interwoven
For the cross of Christ its timbers were chosen.
Seeing the distress at this use of their wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:
"Never again shall the dogwood grow
Large enough to be used so.
Slender and twisted, it shall be
With blossoms like the cross for all to see.
As blood stains the petals marked in brown
The blossom's center wears a thorny crown.
All who see it will remember Me
Crucified on a cross from the dogwood tree.
Cherished and protected, this tree shall be
A reminder to all of my agony." Author Unknown

The first spring we moved into our house, the first flowers Ben planted for me were gerbera daisies, my absolute favorite. Our neighbor gawked at him saying, It’s a waste of money because you have to buy more every year to plant, since they don’t come back every year.

That was 7 years ago. We proved her wrong, didn’t we?

  2. Hey, doesn't your dogwood have a name? Or is that the other tree? Clivey or something? :) Such beautiful blossoms! Your garden was always an inspiration to me, you know? When I planted the bulbs in my yard in VA, it was because I wanted it to look as good as yours. YOu guys always do such an awesome job! :)
